REVIEW: "Current Location" by Savings
We came across 22-year-old Albuquerque-born singer-songwriter Sam Wilmot, aka Savings, when hearing his single, "Current Location". Savings blends a mix of hip-hop and pop in his unique way resembling Jeremy Zucker, Quinn XCII, and LANY while staying true to his soundscapes. Pulling influences from across all genres, Savings prioritizes his music to allow others to use it therapeutically.
"Current Location" is an ambient ballad accompanying Savings' smooth vocal line with dimmed drums and overarching electric guitar melodies. Savings masterfully uses light reverb to create a chorus effect on his vocal line resonating with listeners almost immediately. We got hit right in the feels, in the very best way possible. Connecting with listeners is something Savings strives to do with his new single and radiating positive energy around others. Not only does he successfully tell a romantically inclined story, but he tells a story of falling for someone in the most unexpected ways. When asking Savings what inspired "Current Location", he kept it simple and hopes his listeners feel how real and relatable his stories are. "After spending an evening with an old friend of mine, I left on a high and found myself back in the same boat later on that week, if that makes any sense", he shared.
As the song progresses, Savings eases the listener into his story, walking them into that one evening where the surprising yet pleasant encounter occurred. From serenading his listeners with his detailed and soft descriptions of the love he's pursuing to harmonizing on ensuring he sees that special someone again. He writes about blissfully falling for the unexpected.
I was immediately hooked into the song by the infectious guitar - it sweeps you off your feet and takes you into a hot summer night. We've all had those memorable summer nights, right? Well, "Current Location" takes you there. Savings makes his storytelling sound so effortless, drawing his listeners into his world, into that one moment in time he shares with us. As I went along for the ride, the electric guitar strung me along, and the vocals kept me circling back for more. Savings cleverly counts up in his lyrics, literally rising in numbers as if incrementally bringing the listener closer and closer to his story right before rereleasing us. A brilliant push and pull that I noted as the track neared its end. Sam (Savings) is most definitely an act to look out for. His ease with storytelling, infectious melodies, and instrumental incorporations allow for a raw and extravagant sound. We can't wait to hear more from him.
