Susannah Joffe

Meet Austin’s Newest Breakthrough Artist.

We are more than thrilled to bring you such a promising artist like the one we are introducing here. Meet Susannah Joffe, who hails from Austin, Texas, where she grew up influenced by the art and culture of the city and where she booked her first gig at the young age of 16, not surprisingly, as she has been writing songs since the age of 14 when her father introduced her to songwriting. Bonus fact, the two continue to co-write today, which brings a unique take on songwriting. Who else can say that they write vulnerable catchy songs with their dad?

Susannah's music embodies the grit of Austin's country-blues roots and fittingly pairs it with the colors of queer pop. Her voice effortlessly compliments her sometimes very personal lyrics that take you for a ride on getting to know her and her story better. For example, her breakthrough single, "Backseat", not only caught our attention but the attention of others as it garnered 10k streams in less than a week, and it tells a very personal story for Joffe. The track was written during quarantine when the young artist took time to begin writing on her own, and with that, she was able to write about her experience of coming out. She shares more about that story later.

It's safe to say that "Backseat" creates a refreshing space for LGBTQ-centric songs that speak to anyone familiar with heartbreak. Joffe's ability to be as open and personal with her music is one reason why her music resonates with so many. She is very hands-on in everything she has done and accomplished in her career thus far.

Susannah directed the music video for "Backseat" herself; you can watch it here.

Susannah will continue to define her movement with her upcoming releases to build a full EP by leaning into the fusion of classic indie-pop elements and soulful vocals. She is truly someone we suggest you don't lose sight of, as she’s quickly on her way to stardom, and you can say you learned about her here first. Speaking of which, make sure to read all of Susannah's Five Fun Facts below:

  1. I haven't gotten my car cleaned once since I got it - I'm the messiest person on the planet, so it literally looks like I'm living in it. There's a bag of apples rotting in there somewhere that I genuinely can't find because there is a full closet worth of clothes scattered throughout the car.

  2. I came out during quarantine because I started quarantining with a girl that I was in love with. I had been in love with her for years but literally had NO clue, and that's when I started writing songs on my own. So my single "Backseat" was kind of how I came out to the world because it's about my first relationship with a girl, and that's what my upcoming EP is trying to capture as well.

  3. I had a pet turtle when I was a kid that I bought at a street market in downtown Austin. While I was walking to the car with him, he fell out of the cardboard box that he came in and into the busy street, and I somehow found him. He was just such a bizarre pet after that, he would crawl out of his tank somehow, and I'd find him in random corners of my bedroom. RIP Swimmy <3 I love him forever!

  4. I couldn't sleep one night and came up with an idea for a music video for a song I was writing called "Halloween." I started writing fervently on my Notes app, and we shot the music video a few weeks later before I even finished the song. The song is incredibly personal to me, and I'm kind of scared to put it out because it's just so honest and vulnerable, but I think that's what makes it special, and I'm really excited for people to hear it.

  5. I'm really into the enneagram, which is essentially a detailed personality test type thing similar to Meyers-Briggs. I'm a 6 wing 7: this means that I'm driven by finding security in my life, which I seek through my relationships with others. Because of this, I'm really loyal, and it causes me to hold on to people far longer than I should. It also makes me a really fearful person because I'm so anxious about losing the security I feel like I need so badly. My 7 wing means I'm kind of a "life of the party" type, so I'm always looking for more to get out of my life and never feel quite satisfied. I think that's part of what motivates me to just keep pushing and pushing with my career.
