Five Fun Facts with Jake Hays

Welcome To The Murder Basement.

Finding love can be, well, a lot of things. Going out on dates and meeting new people can be fun, and it can also be a bit complicated. I don't think it should be if both parties are honest with what they expect or don't happen to vibe with one another. You can save so much time by being upfront with the other person—no need to overcomplicate love when it's already by nature quite complicated.

Take, for example, Jake Hays's new track, "OVERCOMPLICATED", which is not only what I've had on repeat since its release but also about what I was previously stating. "OVERCOMPLICATED" is about the aftermath of a bad first date, where one person is trying to put up clear boundaries, and the other person refuses to take the hint. Relatable AF if I do say so myself. Some people you just aren't meant to be around for longer than a day.

The multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, actor, producer, and artist also happens to be a big fan of all things creepy and spooky. The music video for "OVERCOMPLICATED" has elements of a short scary film with its storyline, which finds the singer handcuffed in what we later find out is a murder basement. Did I mention the video is also pretty cute and funny? No, seriously, take a look for yourself, and you'll know what I mean. It's clear to see that Jake has inherited both of his parent's talents. The California native is a solid actor and music maker.

Read what he shared with us below:

  1. I had a project called Maudlin Strangers that I toured the US/Canada with multiple times, opening up for bands like Bad Suns and Cold War Kids.

  2. My mom is a musician, and my dad is an actor, so it’s a little extra fun for me to be doing the two things that they both also loved. My mom was the singer of a badass all-girl rock band called The Runaways, and my dad is best known for his role in “Airplane!” as Ted Striker (If the studios ever revamp the movie, HIT ME UP. YOUNG STRIKER.)

  3. My house burnt down in November 2018 when I was away filming an indie 80s action-movie in Texas, and upon returning to CA and finding a lot of healing through writing new music, I made a big switch to releasing music under my own name. Also, don’t feel bad. So much positive change has come out of it, it’s crazy.

  4. My girlfriend and I recently created a production company called HELLBENT after finding a love for directing music videos during the pandemic. We made one for my song “Sober” in quarantine, and after that, we were hired to direct and produce multiple music videos for my cousin’s band LEVARA.

  5. I used to be a tattoo artist! Alongside music, that was my primary career choice after high school. It’s also something I can’t help but want to get back to at some point, lol. I have an incredibly realistic portrait tattoo of my dog Kaylee on my calf. Also, it’s not a memorial tattoo. She’s very much alive. I just adore her THAT much.
