I listened to the first ten seconds of Drive!Drive!'s latest offering, I then stopped, I picked up my car keys, and I drove about Brooklyn on a Friday night with the band on repeat. Some music is meant for night driving, and "Love is Complicated" is precisely that.
The track starts with a cinematic ambiance, but after the hook, the song explodes into an anthemic chorus that makes you think that surely even Phil Collins would be proud of that one. The Nashville band originally intended this song to be a film pitch, but man, are we glad this landed in our Spotify instead.
The opening synth definitely has a 'Ryan-Gosling-driving-about-LA' kinda vibe (Drive, 2011), but this song also gives us so much more than just those 80s soundscapes and dreamy vocals. In a similar way to The 1975, Drive!Drive! creates a world of retro sounds but assembles them with a modern edge, and it is no surprise this song has already been placed in Spotify's Fresh Finds: Pop playlist.
The band has now racked up over a million streams on Spotify, and if this 'anti-Valentines Day song' is anything to go by, 2021 will likely bring them many more.
